The "IP Box" Regime: Paying 2.5% Tax Legally

Intellectual Property (IP) is often the most valuable asset a modern company holds. Cyprus offers one of the most attractive tax regimes in Europe for IP-heavy businesses, known as the "IP Box".

**How it Works:**

The regime allows for a deemed deduction of 80% of the qualifying profits derived from qualifying assets.

*Calculation:*

If you make €100,000 in profit from your software royalties:

- €80,000 is tax-exempt.

- €20,000 is taxed at the standard 12.5%.

- **Total Tax:** €2,500 (Effective Rate: 2.5%).

**Qualifying Assets:**

- Patents

- Copyrighted Software

- Utility Models

*Note: Marketing trademarks generally do not qualify.*

**The Nexus Fraction:**

To prevent abuse, the OECD requires a "Nexus Approach". You must demonstrate that the R&D expenditure to create the IP actually occurred within the company claiming the benefit.
